Definitions

Logical Thinking Process
A systems-based methodology that uses cause-and-effect logic to identify and solve complex problems by addressing root causes rather than symptoms.
Goal Tree
A hierarchical structure showing the goal at the top, supported by Critical Success Factors (CSFs) and their Necessary Conditions (NCs).
Current Reality Tree
A logical structure mapping cause-effect relationships between Undesirable Effects (UDEs) to identify root causes of problems.
Evaporating Cloud
A logical diagram revealing hidden assumptions in conflicts and finding injections to resolve them.
Future Reality Tree
A projection of how proposed changes will create desired effects and address potential negative consequences.
Prerequisite Tree
A structured implementation plan addressing obstacles with intermediate objectives in logical sequence.
Goal
A clear, measurable statement of what must be achieved, written in present tense as if already accomplished.
Critical Success Factor
An essential condition without which the goal cannot be achieved, even if all other factors are perfect.
Necessary Condition
A specific requirement that must be met for a Critical Success Factor to be achieved.
Undesirable Effect
A negative condition currently existing in the system that stands in opposition to the goal.
Root Cause
The fundamental source from which multiple Undesirable Effects originate.
Conflict
A situation where two necessary requirements appear to be in opposition to each other.
Assumption
An unstated belief about why certain connections in a conflict must exist.
Injection
A solution that resolves a conflict by invalidating one or more assumptions.
Desired Effect
A positive outcome expected to result from implementing the injection.
Negative Branch
An unintended negative consequence that might arise from implementing a solution.
Obstacle
A specific barrier that must be overcome for successful implementation.
Intermediate Objective
A milestone that must be achieved to overcome a specific obstacle.
